New for 2016, Live X underwent exhaustive research and testing in a controlled studio environment to develop four new picture profiles for the Sony PMW-300K1. These profiles are meant to complement but not supplant our 2015 production proven LIVEXD and LIVEXT profiles. We like options and hopefully, you will too.
The 2016 Sony Picture Profiles for the PMW-300K1 were expanded beyond our original LIVEXD and LIVEXT daylight and tungsten profiles, to include even more refined and more accurate looks that get the most out of your PMW-300K1 sensor.
The new profiles feature expanded color science to hit vectorscope targets within +/-2.5 IRE and +/-2.5° of variation, while still pushing the limits of the PMW-300K1 sensor to get the best color rendering and smooth, natural-looking skin tones.
We went beyond revamping our original LIVEXD and LIVEXT color profiles to develop two brand new picture profiles for use with broadcast lenses and cinematic post-production applications.
For broadcast applications, Live X created a custom profile for Canon B4 broadcast lenses to match the standard lenses found on the PMW-300K1, to be used in conjunction with the Live X 2016 standard profiles (LIVEXD16 and LIVEXT16). This was developed by shading the lens to ensure the specific lens used did not affect the final profile. Make sure to always shade your specific lens before color matching so as not to use a profile to correct a lens issue. Using the LIVEX23L profile, users can ensure their stock PMW-300K1 lenses will match up with the more professional broadcast B4 lenses.
The all new LIVEXCNE cine profile for PMW-300K1, provides the flexibility in post by recording a flatter image with expanded control over shadows and highlights. Special care was taken when creating the new cine profile to preserve skin tone color and detail while allowing operators to hold highlight and shadow detail for manipulation in post. This profile is more complimentary for combining the Sony PMW-300K1 with the Cine Gamma (Cine3/4) options found in the Sony A7SII, Sony FS-5 and Sony FS-7 cameras.
To use the Profile on your PMW-300K1:
1. Format SXS (Make sure in “OTHERS” menu – System is “FAT” in camera)
2. Unzip file and Copy “SONY” folder to root of SXS
3. Load SXS in Camera
4. Go to OTHERS menu, navigate to CAMERA DATA and select RECALL
5. You will see the 4 new Picture Profiles when you select Picture Profile menu, along with our original LIVEXD and LIVEXT daylight and tungsten profiles.
Below you will find the settings we used for the Picture Profiles above as well as notes on why we chose what we did.
